PC Maintenance

Just like your car, your pc needs regular maintenance to stay in good shape. If you don't perform routine maintenance, or wait too long in between, your pc can start to have a variety of issues. Here are some issues to be considered when maintaining your pc.

* As your computer writes data to your hard drive it scatters it over the entire surface of the drive. After a period of time your data becomes fragmemented and your computer slows down. Running a disk defragmenter utility periodically will keep your data consolidated.

* Use an anitvirus software to protect your computer from virus that could infect your computer through a disk, an email or while surfing the internet. There are many good antivirus programs available on the market today. Some of them have built in protection against spyware and adware as well. While having an antivirus package is important, it won't be effective long if you don't keep the virus definitions updated. Also, make sure that the realtime virus protection portion of your software is enabled. If you don't have currently have antivirus installed or you're not sure it's been protecting you properly, the Trend Micro programs available below will scan your pc for you.

* When you don't need a program anymore, make sure to use the Add/Remove Programs function in Windows or the utility that came with the program if available. Never manually delete a program. Simply deleting the folder and shortcuts for a program do not uninstall it.

* Last, use good work habits. Shut down your machine properly, and respond to warnings and error messages promptly. You should also keep your machine as clean as possible by periodically opening its case to remove accumulated dust, cleaning your keyboard and removing dust from your mouse.
